Deep down, you know you shouldn't bite your nails. But that doesn't stop you having a quick gnaw every now and then, when you think no-one is looking.
So what can you do to quit your nail biting habit?
1. Keep your hands occupied
If your hands are nowhere near your teeth, it's a lot more difficult to bite your nails (unless you're a contortionist). So find something else to do with your hands and keep them occupied.
2. Wear a rubber band on your wrist
Every time you catch yourself about to bite your nails, flick the rubber band to give yourself a short, sharp shock. Pavolv used this "stimulus response" to train dogs and it works at least as well with humans. You'll start to associate the feeling of pain with the pleasure of nibbling your nails. And likely change your habit so you don't hurt yourself as often.
3. Use some nasty tasting potion
You can buy stuff to paint over your nails from your chemist or places like Amazon. As soon as you brush your teeth in the morning, apply this evil tasting solution to your nails. Then when you come to trim your nails with your teeth, you'll get first hand experience of how bad this stuff tastes.
4. Lower your stress levels
Often we're driven to bite our nails when we're stressed. The old childhood habit (that may or may not have gone away in later life) comes back and suddenly you've got no nails left to cover the tips of your fingers. Find out what's stressing you out and you could cure your nail biting as a side effect.
Another way to stop biting your nails is to enlist the help of a hypnosis track that's been especially recorded to help you get over this habit that's crept up on you. Find out more about how to use hypnosis to stop nail biting here.
