How To Stop Biting Your Fingernails

By Trevor Johnson

OK. You've seen the products for sale that claim to be the only thing you need. But

just how do you stop biting your fingernails?

There are various methods you can use to stop yourself. Some of them can also be used to stop other people around you, such as your children, from biting their nails. Let's have a look at the various techniques you can use:

1. Nasty, bitter tasting potions

These can be especially handy if your son or daughter won't stop biting their nails. There are plenty of different products around that you can use - have a word with your local pharmacist or search on Amazon. All of them work much the same way. You paint them onto your nails (don't worry - they're usually clear, not colored). But they taste awful. Usually a bitter taste. This means when you come to bite your fingernails, you are put off by the taste and stop. It sounds simple and it usually is.

2. Using an elastic band - cheap aversion therapy

Wrap an elastic band around your wrist. Every time you find yourself about to bite your fingernails down to a stub again, you snap the rubber band. Ouch. The idea is that you will then stop the habit as the short sharp pain of the snapped elastic band will steer you away from gnawing at your nails.

3. Use a self help MP3

A habit is a habit. Chewing your nails is no different. Which means that a hypnosis MP3 can work quite effectively for a lot of people. All you need to do is listen to the MP3 once a day for a few days and your mind will gradually be trained away from biting your nails and will do other, more productive things instead. These can work well for lots of people and are remarkably inexpensive.
